Chapter 40: Turn on the Light and Take a Look at Yourself
She was running around between the lawyer, Future Better Technology Company, and Hands–free Intelligent
Technology Company, so busy that she didn’t even have time to sleep. Occasionally, she received Whatsapp messages from Penn, but she didn’t have time to read them, let alone reply, as they were all trivial matters that were of no importance.
For example, don’t forget to eat breakfast, there’s milk and bread in the fridge.
For example, I’ve already talked to the chef at the Future Better Technology Company’s employee canteen. You and Blair can just go there directly.
For example, Julia said you stayed up all night today? This merger isn’t urgent, there’s no need to rush.
Serena had no time to pay attention to Penn’s messages. She was burdened by every little thing and felt like a mountain was pressing down on her. Emails, phone calls, and Whatsapp messages came in all at once every day, pushing her forward relentlessly.
Penn messaged her a few times but stopped when she didn’t reply. Almost 10 days later, he suddenly sent her a message.
“I’m going back to my country at the end of the month.” It was an inexplicable itinerary report to her.

She saw this message on a Friday evening when Blair forcibly closed her computer and took her out for dinner.
“Mr. Humphrey sent this?”
“Yeah.” She didn’t pay much attention and put her phone aside.
Blair looked at the chat page, all messages sent by Penn, and was surprised that Serena didn’t reply to any of them.
“Don’t you feel anything for him?” Blair was very curious.
“What feeling?” Serena had rare downtime, her mind was blank, and she answered a bit absent–mindedly.
“I think Penn’s feelings for you are already very obvious, even though he hasn’t said it directly,” Blair reminded her.
Serena was still numb and replied lightly, “You’ve said it before, if a man wants to get a woman into bed, he’s best at pretending to be gentle and considerate. You’ve also said that if a man really likes you, he will tell you clearly.”
“Well, although that’s what I said, it depends on the person. He’s Penn, what kind of woman can’t he have? If he just wants a bed partner, he doesn’t have to go to such great lengths. Think about it, his kindness to you is not just because of being a sleeping partner.”
Serena thought Blair was joking and couldn’t imagine that Penn would like her. From the beginning to the end, their way of interacting was very direct, often straight to the point. Of course, Penn took care of her in her daily life, but she believed it was not because he liked her, but because of

his manners. He would have treated any girl the same way.
“Serena, I’ve been telling you to let go and enjoy yourself, as long as you don’t violate morals or laws. But, besides letting your body loose, what about your heart? You should also let it go and have a sweet romance. Don’t think about the future or whether there will be any results. Just enjoy the moment. Penn would be a good romantic partner.”
Blair rarely talked seriously with her, but Serena was carefree and burst out laughing. “Blair, this is so unlike you, what’s bothering you?”
“I’m serious. You’re so busy right now, I’m afraid you’ll die suddenly without experiencing the feeling of being in love. Trust me, Penn would be a great romantic partner for you.”
Serena couldn’t help but laugh and cry. She was so busy, but Blair had pulled her out just to instil this idea in her. “Okay, I’ll focus on dating once I finish this project.”
After dinner, both of them walked hand in hand back home. Serena rarely relaxed, and at the intersection of their complex, she clung to Blair and cooed, “Who needs love when you have a best friend?”
Blair pushed her away in disgust. “Don’t ruin my chance of finding love just because you’re not interested.”
Serena laughed, but then turned serious. “Blair, thank you.” She was referring to the extra money in her bank account that had solved her urgent problem.
Blair said goodbye, warning her not to stay up late again. Serena followed her advice, rested well, and when she was

ready to sleep after watching a show for a while, she received a video call request from Penn.
She didn’t want to answer, but she thought of Blair’s advice from earlier: “It’s not difficult to open up your heart appropriately.” So she answered.
It was late at night in China, but it was sunny overseas, and Penn’s silhouette was in the office. The two phone screens were black and white.
“Are you going to sleep?” His voice was low.
“I’m getting ready to.” Her voice was lazy.
They were silent, not knowing what to talk about. As for work, she wrote detailed reports every day, and he could read them directly. As for personal matters, there didn’t seem to be much to talk about.
In a black and white screen, Serena’s face was obscured in darkness, with only a blurry outline visible.
“Turn on the light, let me see you,” Penn said.
Serena didn’t refuse and turned on the bedside lamp, which cast a warm yellow light, making her look soft. Penn
suddenly laughed, “Is there anything you want as a gift? I’m going back to China next week.”
“I thought you were only coming back at the end of the month?”
“Mm, I’m coming back early.”
Serena thought seriously about it. She did have something

she needed to bring back – the hospital recommended changing her mother’s medication to a new, more expensive one due to resistance to the current one. However, she decided against asking Penn, given the situation at home and her reluctance to let him know. Her thoughts were churning inside, but she didn’t show any signs on her face.
After a while, Penn said, “Go to bed early, goodnight.”
On the video call, Penn’s secretary came to find him for a meeting. This secretary seemed to be stationed at the overseas headquarters, and didn’t follow Penn back to China for work.
Over the weekend, Serena mainly sorted out the investigation reports from Hands–free Intelligent
Technology Company’s various branch offices and planned next week’s work, which she compiled into a report and sent to Emma for review.
Ever since she took over the Future Better Technology Company project, Emma had trusted her completely, delegating all kinds of tasks to her. Only occasionally did Emma offer guidance on key issues.
Serena went from having no confidence to being extremely confident, to the point where even Charlie marvelled at her professional competence, which had matured to the level of a seasoned lawyer. If she didn’t mention that she was a beginner, no one would believe it.
“It’s all thanks to Emma and Mr. Jordan’s guidance,” Serena said with a smile.

This was true. With their guidance and her own hard work, patience, and critical thinking skills, many problems could be avoided by thinking five steps ahead.
Currently, the project is progressing by collecting and checking relevant information from the various branches of Hands–free Intelligent Technology Company, according to the previous investigation checklist. With so many branches, Charlie, Nina, and three other lawyers went to different ones to work for half a month and had completed two–thirds of the work.
Emma’s plan was to wait for the branch office information to be reviewed before returning to the headquarters of Hands–free Intelligent Technology Company, where they would focus their efforts on conducting due diligence on the headquarters‘ information.
